Garbage explain Big Bright World

Garbage have been chatting to Idolator

With less than a month to go before the release of Garbage‘s long-awaited Not Your Kind Of People, the band have offered up a stylish black-and-white clip for “Big Bright World” where they explain how the track came to be and employ various artistic clips to give the song some cinematic flourish. “You’re mysterious, you make no sense, I love you because you’re innocent, you fell out through a hole inside the sun,” Shirley Manson sings on “Big Bright World”, which rings with some added poignancy given that Sunday is Earth Day. Garbage member Steve Marker explains that he was staying at apartment at Hollywood Blvd. and Vine Street in Hollywood — “The noisiest place I’ve ever been,” he notes — when he came up with the melody for “Big Bright World”.

Butch Vig calls the song “maybe the most anthemic track on the record,” so needless to say, it met the rest of the band’s approval — particularly Shirley’s.

“I think we were really excited as a band to get back together, and [“Big Bright World”] sort of captures the excitement of us playing together for the first time in a long time,” Manson says.

Images of the sun, a rose and Manson holding up a cracked, antique-looking mirror play out in the mini-video, before we finally see the frontwoman sitting in a window, gazing through the people on a busy sidewalk and staring into a forest. Then the camera finally fades to black.
