Vig & Manson work together

news0189.thumbnail.jpg Billboard.com report that Butch Vig has confirmed that there may be new Garbage material in 2007.

“Despite the layoff, the group has been sharing song ideas via the Internet in recent months and is hoping to record a few them in March. “We need to sit down in a room and play them and get them complete,” Vig says.”

Butch has also stated that he has been working with Shirley Manson on tracks for her forthcoming solo album, due for release later this year.

Vig has also written a couple of songs with frontwoman Shirley Manson for her in-progress solo album, but adds, “she has worked with seven or eight different people, just to see what the chemistry is like. It took awhile for her to get up to speed. She hasn’t played me anything yet, but I’ve heard the songs are great.”

Garbage, Bonnie Raitt, the Martinis (Joey Santiago and David Lovering of the Pixies), Keb’ Mo’, Victoria Williams and Tom Freund, Freedy Johnston and the Section Quartet have signed on for a benefit concert for veteran drummer Wally “Llama” Ingram, who is suffering from throat cancer.

The event will be held Jan. 31 in Glendale, Calif., and was organized by Garbage’s Butch Vig, who has known Ingram for more than 20 years. The pair cut their rock’n’roll teeth in Madison, Wisc., and an album by Ingram’s band, Sometimes Y, was the first Vig produced at his Smart Studios complex. Ingram has gone on to play with Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman and Eric Burdon, among others.

“He just found out about this throat cancer about four months ago, and he’s going through really hardcore chemo and radiation,” Vig tells Billboard.com. “Doctors have given him a pretty good prognosis, but he has taken a beating from the treatment. He’s only in his early 40s. A lot of people in this country don’t have adequate health care, so we’re trying to raise some money to help cover his bills.”

Vig expects the evening will begin “semi-acoustic” and “become more electric by the end, with a lot of collaborating going on.” Garbage, which has been on hiatus for the past year, is planning to play “an unusual set; something atypical, and two or three songs with a string quartet.”

Despite the layoff, the group has been sharing song ideas via the Internet in recent months and is hoping to record a few them in March. “We need to sit down in a room and play them and get them complete,” Vig says.

Vig has also written a couple of songs with frontwoman Shirley Manson for her in-progress solo album, but adds, “she has worked with seven or eight different people, just to see what the chemistry is like.
